Examiners’ reports

June 09 session examiners’ reports now online.

Invaluable advice for tuition providers and students, examiners’ reports provide constructive feedback on candidate performance following each exam session. They cover:

  • technical aspects of the syllabus that were examined in the questions
  • whether candidates performed well or poorly
  • what aspects of the questions appeared to cause difficulty to candidates and if possible why it was a problem, eg lack of knowledge, poor exam technique, etc.

Using examiners’ reports
As a tutor, it’s useful to refer to the examiners’ reports when you’re using past exam questions with students. Once an answer has been put together by students, either in class or as a piece of homework, you can refer to the relevant examiner’s analysis of that question to illustrate how well they have tackled it.

The reports are also useful for making sure you are familiar with how students, in general, have performed in a particular exam. This can help you to identify any knowledge gaps and assess whether your students might need to improve their exam technique.

Selling the benefits to students
Advise your students to refer to the relevant examiner’s report after working through a practice question on their own. The feedback is invaluable for students attempting a paper for the first time as well as retake candidates. Learning how candidates have attempted questions in the wrong way, or have omitted areas of importance from their studies, as well as getting an understanding of where examiners felt candidates did well, will increase their chances of passing.

Post-exam reports are published for each exam paper, and they are available on the ACCA website in March and September.
